About Sam Usher – Registered Clinical Counsellor

My Experience Working Alongside You

Grounded, practical counselling for people navigating stress, burnout,
relationships, and life in demanding environments.

A Different Path Into
Counselling

My path into counselling has been a little different than most. Before becoming a counsellor, I spent years working in rugged, high-pressure environments across mining, forestry, ski patrol, avalanche operations, first aid, and wilderness guiding.

I’ve worked in places where people are expected to keep going, stay capable, and push through even when stress has been building for a long time. That lived experience shapes how I show up as a counsellor today.

I understand demanding workplace cultures, shift and camp life, critical incidents, and the strain these pressures can place on relationships, wellbeing, and sense of self.

My Approach

My approach as a Registered Clinical Counsellor is person-centered and practical. I want therapy to feel real and useful—not overly clinical or detached. As a Registered Clinical Counsellor in Fernie, BC, I know that the people I work with don't always relate to traditional counselling, so I keep things straightforward.
I aim to create a space where you can talk openly, feel understood, and walk away with tools you can actually use in everyday life. I can be direct when it's helpful, while still moving at your pace. No pressure. No judgment. Just honest conversation and practical support.

What You Can Expect

Starting therapy can feel like a big step—and it's completely normal to feel unsure at first. My role is to create a calm, supportive space where you can speak openly, without pressure or judgement.

In our sessions, we'll move at a pace that feels right for you. Together, we'll explore what's been weighing on you, identify patterns, and work toward practical ways to help you feel more grounded, clear, and in control.

This is your space—to talk, reflect, and begin making meaningful changes in your life.

My Story

My Journey Into Counselling

My path into counselling began with a deep interest in understanding people — their stories, struggles, and strengths. Over time, I saw how powerful it can be to have someone truly listen and support you through difficult moments.

My approach has been shaped not only by professional training, but also by real-life experiences and a strong connection to nature and wellbeing.

Why Nature Matters

Nature has a quiet way of helping us reset. It plays an important role in regulating our nervous system and how we move through stress. As an Registered Clinical Counsellor in Fernie BC, I've seen how even short periods of time outside can shift how we feel — bringing a sense of calm, clarity, and perspective that's hard to find in the pace of daily life. You don't need a big hike or an outdoor adventure.

Sometimes it's just stepping outside, breathing different air, and letting your nervous system settle. Research shows that spending just 20–30 minutes in nature can significantly lower cortisol levels — our primary stress hormone. That's why I offer walk-and-talk therapy. Not as a workout, but as a different way to have a conversation — moving side by side, at your pace, with a little more room to breathe.
